Every day, millions of posts are published across LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and every other platform competing for our attention.

We keep scrollin' scrollin' scrollin'

Most of them disappear.

Not because the advice is wrong, or the production quality is poor, or the creator isn't knowledgeable.

These posts disappear because they never earned attention in the first place.

The **biggest mistake creators make** is assuming good information is enough.

It isn't...well at least not anymore.

We're living in an attention economy where every swipe, click, like, comment, and scroll is a decision. Before someone can appreciate your expertise, they first have to decide you're worth listening to.

That decision happens in seconds.

If you can't **stop the scroll**, nothing else matters.

## Information Doesn't Win Attention, Stories Do.

Think about the last piece of content you actually remembered.

Chances are, it wasn't a list of five productivity tips.

It was a story.

**Stories activate something deeper than logic.**

They create emotion, curiosity, tension, and resolution. They make people lean in instead of swipe away.

Information tells people what to think.

Stories make people feel something.

And people remember feelings far longer than facts.

That's why the highest-performing creators don't simply teach, **they tell stories** that make their lessons impossible to forget.

## Why Storytelling Works

Great storytelling accomplishes three things:

### Improved Retention

People rarely remember bullet points, they remember moments.

Instead of remembering *"five ways to improve your content,"* they'll remember the creator who almost missed the concert they'd waited years to attend because they spent the entire time filming it.

Stories create mental pictures and pictures are memorable.

### Builds Trust

Trust isn't built by proving you're smart.

It's built by showing people you've experienced what they're experiencing.

Stories create relatability, relatability creates connection.

And **connection creates trust.**

### Inspires Action

Information answers questions. Stories create motivation.

A great story moves someone from:

*"That makes sense"* to *"I need to try that."*

That's a huge difference for creators, marketers, leaders, and business owners.

## The Hook Is More Important Than Your Content

Your Audience Needs to be Hooked

Most people think they have a content problem.

They actually have a **hook problem.**

If people tune out or scroll away after first few seconds, it doesn't matter how brilliant the rest of your content is.

Social media isn't competing against other creators.

It's **competing against infinity,** aka the infinite scroll.

Every swipe gives someone another option, therefore your hook exists for one purpose...

**Convince your audience NOT to leave!**

## Three Types of Hooks That Stop the Scroll

### 1\. Curiosity

Curiosity creates a gap between what your audience knows and what they want to know.

*Weak: Here are three LinkedIn tips.*

*Strong: No one tells you this about growing on LinkedIn.*

The goal isn't to hide information. It's to create just **enough unanswered questions** that people **stay for the answer.**

### 2\. Contrarian

People ignore content they've heard before, but they pause when something **challenges what they believe.**

*Weak: Consistency is important.*

*Strong: Consistency isn't the reason you're not growing.*

The key isn't being controversial.

It's being unexpected. But then, of course, you have to *deliver* on your promise.

### 3\. Stakes

People pay attention when something important could happen.

Or when something important could go wrong.

*Weak: Here's how storytelling works.*

*Strong: If your story doesn't create tension, your audience has no reason to keep watching.*

When people understand what's at stake, they suddenly **care about the solution.**

## Stop Saving the Best Part for the End

One of the **biggest storytelling mistakes** creators make is telling stories like movies.

Movies build toward the climax.

Social media doesn't have that luxury.

People won't wait 45 seconds for the interesting part.

Instead, use the storytelling technique the **Inverted Pyramid**.

Start with the **most compelling idea**, explain it, and then provide supporting examples or details.

Think of it like this:

**Hook → Big Idea → Proof → Details → Takeaway**

Lead with the payoff and earn the explanation later.

---

## Open Loops Keep People Watching

Hooks earn attention.

**Open loops keep it.**

An open loop introduces a question without immediately answering it.

Instead of saying: *I tested three marketing strategies.*

Say: *I tested three marketing strategies. Two failed completely. The third changed everything.*

Now your audience **has to know what happened.**

Every movie trailer, mystery novel, and television drama does this.

Great content should too.

---

## Emotion Is the Secret Ingredient

Facts are important.

Emotion is memorable.

Ask yourself:

- Can someone relate to this?
- Is there tension?
- Is there something surprising?
- Does this create hope?
- Does it remind someone of themselves?

People don't connect with information. They connect with experiences.

The stronger the emotional connection, the **longer someone stays engaged.**

---

## Momentum Matters

Attention isn't something you earn once. It's something you **continually re-earn.**

One of the easiest ways to lose momentum in your content is adding **details that don't matter.**

We've all heard storytellers who spend five minutes explaining what everyone was wearing before getting to the point.

Cut...it...out

Every sentence should **move the story forward.**

If it doesn't increase curiosity...

Create emotion...

Raise the stakes...

Or advance the story...

**It doesn't belong** in your content.

---

## A Simple Storytelling Framework

Whenever you're creating content, run it through this framework.

### 1\. Hook

Capture attention immediately.

### 2\. Big Idea

What's the lesson or insight?

### 3\. Open Loop

Give people a reason to keep watching.

### 4\. Emotional Beat

Create tension, relatability, aspiration, or surprise.

### 5\. Clear Takeaway

Leave your audience with one lesson they'll actually remember.

It's simple, but it works because it mirrors how **humans naturally consume stories.**

## The Best Teachers Are Great Storytellers

One of the biggest misconceptions about content creation is that teaching and storytelling **are separate skills.**

Well let me clear this up for you...they're not.

The teachers we remember most weren't the ones who simply gave us information. They were the ones who wrapped **every lesson in a story,** an analogy, or a memorable example.

The same is true for social media.

If your goal is to become the person your audience trusts, don't teach less. Teach in a way that's impossible to forget.

Before you publish your next post, ask yourself: *"What's the lesson?"*

Then ask: *"What's the story that brings that lesson to life?"*

Your expertise is what earns trust.

Your storytelling is what earns attention.
